Hair Transplantation

The most advanced type of hair transplantation is referred to as follicular unit hair transplant technique the individual follicle transplant technique. Dr. Samuels begins by giving you a sedative (like valium) to help you relax. A local anesthetic is used to numb your scalp in order to minimize discomfort during your procedure.

The surgery begins with the removal of a strip of hair-bearing scalp, usually from the sides and back of your head. The individual follicles (or follicular units) are then separated under a microscope. The individual follicles and follicular units can then be placed into tiny slits (about the size of a needle point) in bald or thinning areas of the scalp. By using this technique, a more natural appearance can be created. Using tiny grafts allows hairs to be placed more closely together. At the same time, this technique gives Dr. Samuels greater control over your results. That means that you can achieve a natural look after the first and any subsequent treatments. This avoids the awkward appearance created with plugs, micrografts, or older techniques.

About Hair Loss in Men and Women
Many myths surround the topic of hair loss and its causes. Although age, illness, stress, and other factors may increase hair loss, they are not the root cause.

In short, male pattern baldness is a hereditary matter -- those affected have hair follicles that are genetically predisposed to be lost. Male pattern baldness has been associated with increased level of a certain androgen (hormone) called DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in balding scalp. As levels of DHT increase, the genetically predisposed follicles begin to shrink, meaning that the hair they produce is shorter and thinner vs. finer than it used to be. This process continues until the follicle no longer produces any hair at all. Hair transplantation surgery works by placing healthy donor follicles taken from elsewhere on the scalp in the thinning or balding area. Donor follicles maintain their original growth cycle.

Some degree of hair loss occurs in nearly 20% of women as well. Female hair loss can be caused by age, illness, or hormones. Unlike the typical "horseshoe" pattern of hair loss that occurs in men, women tend to experience a general thinning of hair all over their head. Hair replacement surgery can help women increase the thickness of their hair while boosting their self-esteem and appearance.

Who is a good candidate?
The best candidates for hair transplantation suffer from male pattern baldness or female hair loss, but still have enough hair on the back and sides of their head for a transplant to be effective. Good candidates understand both the benefits of hair transplantation surgery and its limitations. Although the results can improve your appearance, they may not restore the exact look of your youth. If you maintain realistic expectations, you are more likely to be satisfied with your results.
